An interesting piece of violence Jul 06, 2010 Viggo Mortensen plays Tom Stall, proprieter of a diner in a small town in the mid-west. Tom has a beautiful wife, played by Maria Bella, and a son and daughter.
One day a couple of bad - and I mean really, really bad - men come into Tom's diner. The menacing scene is resolved when Tom is provoked and dispatches the bullying baddies as easily as Bruce Lee kicking a collective roomful of bad backsides. Everyone is surprised - how could Tom have dispatched those ruthless toughs so easily?
Soon Ed Harris, sporting a wicked scar, shows up at Tom's diner, claiming that Tom is not an innocent small-town guy at all. No, Harris claims that "Tom" gave that scar in his previous life working for the mob.
Hitchcock loved the tale of the innocent man suddenly thrown into a cyclone of turmoil and intrigue. Cronenberg reverses roles with the story of a man who is not innocent, but leaves a life with the mob to try a life behind white picket fences. I don't know about the real mob, but in films they never take kindly to such independence.
Umm, It's violent, also a great story and great acting by all Jul 03, 2010 I think somebody placed the body count at 13. That sounds about right, Except for early scenes most deserved their fate.
Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris are stand-outs as is the screenplay.
Interesting Cronenbeg Mob Tale May 31, 2010 A diner owner's Philly ganster past catches up with him following publicity over his heroic action during a robbery. Now Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) must make things right with his wife (Maria Bello) and son while looking over his shoulder to protect his family from mob wackers. Ed Harris and William Hurt are at their best projecting mobster sadism. Mortensen and Bello work perfectly together, especially in the steamy "gangster sex" scene on the stairs. A History of Violence has good fast-paced gun action and never becomes bogged down in unnecessary detail.
This film is very good even though it lacks big production grit and things unfold too conveniently, as good continually tromps over evil; but this is not a problem since you'll always be rooting for Viggo as he fights off more than a fair share of mob low-life creatures. The BD had very good picture quality.
Mesmerizing May 05, 2010 A History of Violence is a film about Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen)l a loving husband and father to a family with two children in a small town in Indiana. Corn fields surround his rural area home and he drives a pick-up truck. Tom also owns a small diner in town and has been in this town and married, living a quiet idyllic existence for about twenty years.
The movie slowly builds and develops complexity when Tom stops a vicious robbery in his diner. He protects his innocent employees and customers in amazing defensive and offensive reflexes beyond what normal men can do. Tom reminded me of a Clark Kent that can turn into his alter-ego Superman when needed. (His son also shows Tom's quick reflexes and thinking when he is unfairly attacked by high school bullies. By standing up to the bully and his friends he gains respect and the right to be left alone.)
Unfortunately for Tom, he is featured as a hero on several news stations as well as the newspaper. His life and face are in the spotlight, which immediately signals a threatening mobster from out of town (Ed Harris). He arrives into town with two thugs with a story that Tom attacked him and ruined his face and eye with barbed wire. Tom's past is unpeeled layer by layer as he struggles to protect his family from his violent past.
After the two confrontations and killing out of town mobsters, Tom is ruinited with his "good guy" brother, Ritchie (William Hurt). Ritchie is mixed up with the mob and wants vengence with Tom for leaving him "holding the bag" from the past. The acting does not skip a beat - the casting is excellent and the movie is mesmerizing. This is a top-notch psychological thriller, putting light on beliefs, relationships and the audacity of using violence to protect and save relationships.
No Time Wasted Apr 21, 2010
This movie was great. No fooling around with non-essential parts in the movie. Everything moved along nicely and came right to the point. The action was violent, but was not drawn out on and on. I loved the acting of Viggo with his soft spoken natural voice and then to watch him switch to a violent person so quickly. I thought the whole movie was great! All the actors were excellent in their parts. Highly worth seeing! I purchased this movie in Blu-ray
